The Department
The Hay River Volunteer Fire Department is comprised of 27 Paid on Call members. These dedicated individuals provide fire, rescue and ambulance service to the community of Hay River and surrounding areas extending as far south as the NWT border, as far east as Fort Resolution and as far west as Red Knife River and Fort Providence.
Safety of our members is our number one priority and this is obtained through extensive training. The department meets every Thursday for training and Sunday nights for weekly equipment checks and maintenance. Thursday night training is often tailored to the seasons and the types of scenarios that may be encountered. These may include burn scenarios in the training tower, vehicle extrication practice, hydrant training, searches in the smoke house, or basic equipment review like knot tying. Structured courses offered through the department include Defensive and Offensive fire training, pump courses, first aid, Emergency Medical Responder, water and ice rescue, airport vehicle operations, fire scene investigation and many more.
